When I first came to New Zealand I went sightseeing along much of the North Islands East Coast. The blue Pacific waters, white beaches, unique holiday areas, sunrises, sunsets, and bach’s (NZ beach house) captivated my newfound enthusiasm for the new life I had embarked on.
The series of Kodak negative film photographs from the mid-’80s became a catalyst for this Mixed Media painting “Hunter-Gatherers 1”, a beach passion. View “Hunter-Gatherers 2” with a different painting on the theme.
The painting was on the easel in 2010-12, reworked in 2013, and in 2015 the louvers, Heron, and canvas painted shell squares.
Perhaps a true reflection of an artist with no end of ideas I was never satisfied with the original and kept adding ideas.
The thoughts for the artwork percolated while watching people hunting and gathering collectibles from the beach. The take-home mementos and edibles fulfilled a want to collect.
While painting the artwork I noted all creation has within its DNA the hunter-gatherer passion. Telling the story as a parable I added the shells and pearl as a symbolic twist revealing mankind’s desire to collect.
We all hunt to gather
Thinking about it, we all hunt to gather, whether seeking information about our origins, information to create technologies, a companion to love, a worm for dinner, a divine to talk to, a converted award … we are all hunters. Life is in perpetual motion before our use-by date while the batten of collecting passes onto the next generation.
We hunt money, love, peace, God, vocational guidance, the perfectly backed cake to feed children, answers to conquer viruses, stars in the heavens, and shells on the beach.
I hunted shells at Omaha Beach (New Zealand) for the parable in this Mixed Media painting.
The philosopher’s thoughts
What about the philosopher’s desire to seek the meaning of life, the religious persons’ desire to please their chosen Gods, the business persons’ desire to hunt and gather profits, the politician’s desire to win an election, while others hunt the underprivileged to feed and encourage or the scientists’ desire to find answers in the universe? We all hunt.
Then there is the lion’s desire to hunt and gather an antelope and feed its young, the young woman’s passion to bed a man for love, or the alcoholics’ desire to get drunk and forget their pain for a season, while the Kingfisher hunts a lizard for dinner. We all, hunt.
And the desire for *evil which never rests as some hunt from jealousy, envy, and pride, to murder, rob a bank, rape, hunt to lie, and pervert justice, these are destructive desires. We all hunt.
Most hunt to have peace, security, love, and an inviting house or business environment, with purpose-filled wisdom building a nest in which to house our cultures and gathered collectibles.
All of us hunter-gatherers may ask this free will question. “What are the desires I hunt for and what is it I want to gather before my race is run and I leave to meet my maker”?
You’ve got it!!!! … “You hunter-gatherer”.
