THE STORY
I am full of wonder when I consider the Jesus story and the preachers He sends to tell His story. Caricature gospel preachers cartoon
Mahurangi Presbyterian Minister Nick McLennan’s Caricature was commissioned by his Executive Pastor, Roger Mackay.
I was excitedly attracted by the commission of drawing Nick’s Caricature. It stirred up latent memories of my days as an Editorial illustrator/cartoonist with The Christchurch Press and INL Publishing (Evening Post and Dominion newspapers) in Wellington, New Zealand in the 1980s.
In the process of drawing Caricatures, I get insights into a person’s personality by observing appearances, and character traits, and overhearing conversations regarding presentation and a few weaknesses and strengths.
These insights presented me with a personality to draw as if creating a nickname and the visage inspires me to muse on hidden light-hearted humor.
Nick is unique and the twist of humor embellishes his good memory for all those who know him.
I chose kindness with the humorous twist in his parable. In some ways it is similar to the prophetic, seeing what others don’t see and making it visible.
Humour with a bite
The bit of humor inspires my visionary appetite to stir some trouble by “Putting a cat among the pigeons of religious perfectionists”. This bit of rebellion challenged me to put “The Gospel Preachers Joy” out amongst my critics to shred while others get a laugh.
Some will say, Wow, others will take offense but written in my heart is a skilled good intention.
If you take offense, my personal prayer is, “Be inspired by God and see clean humor for what it is … fun”. Don’t take life too seriously, be thankful in all circumstances and give praise for the skills others use to make life a wonder. Life will be more pleasant if you can.
Why the ice cream and Jesus
Well, go figure, what brings joy to the flesh and to those Born Again in spirit?
You must be “Born Again” (the second birth) to understand the wonder found in the spirit world and how would you know that without a preacher? You must be born (the first birth) to enjoy ice cream.
The Caricature illustration technique
The Caricature borrows realist pencil skills to illustrate and control pencil lead in mid-tone *(Chiaroscuro) capture.
The animated torso shapes challenged my knowledge. I created more sensitive pencil strokes combining numerous pencil strengths. I also included finger blending, cross-hatching, and hard outlining.
Once I was satisfied with the pencil, I inked in the hard outline, scanned the image, and digitized the color. Voila, Nick, the preacher man meets the world with his ice cream.
* Chiaroscuro (Italian for light-dark) in art is the use of strong contrasts between light and dark. Usually, there are bold contrasts affecting a whole composition.

Lead pencil on watercolor paper, scanned, digitized and color added in Photoshop. Framed in an A2 folded A3 gift card to be signed and presented for Nick’s 10th-anniversary celebration.
