THE STORY

This was a joyful moment where I pushed past the usual limits of technique, materials, and even the question, “What is art?” It was inspired by a Hauraki sunrise in Auckland. Hauraki Sunrise Auckland New Zealand

My only instruction to myself was, “Just do it.” I turned up some classical music, moved freely around the canvas, and splashed on household acrylic paint. I added water and ink, dribbled more acrylic into the lettering, and let creativity lead the way. When I finished, I stood back and wondered, “What am I going to do with this?”

A few years later, I had a breakthrough idea. I added elements of Māoridom, touches of modern Kiwiana, a few water birds, and a yacht painted in oils — and the piece finally came together.

More Insights

I know this is an artistic expression, and someone out there will truly enjoy having it on their wall. It’s not my place to judge its value.

The joy I felt in stepping beyond my usual photorealistic style is something I hope carries over to the person who owns it. Most likely, they’ll connect with familiar and meaningful elements — Rangitoto Island, the America’s Cup, the Hauraki Gulf, and the warm colours of a sunrise.

Creative choices

I gave myself another simple instruction: “Don’t let it go to waste, waste not, want not. – Turn it into framed fine art and let the public decide what they think.”
