THE STORY

A journey from a desert road into the mountains of New Zealand’s North Island led to this unexpected encounter with wild daisies.

I was walking alone in the early morning sunlight, scanning the landscape with an alert and eager creative mind. The crunch beneath my boots — mountain grasses stiff in the crisp air — felt like nature announcing the new day. For a moment, I even imagined a carpet designer studying the ground, wondering how such organic patterns might translate into the lobby of a city hotel.

My mind is wired for wonder. impressionism painting mountain daisies 

Travelling regularly with a camera has become an essential part of my creative process. It allows me to gather reference images — fragments of experience that later evolve into paintings.

That morning, I wandered through unfamiliar terrain, each step revealing new possibilities. Then suddenly: “Oh my goodness.” A cluster of delicate white petals, almost sparkling against the stark mountain desert, caught my eye. Fragile beauty in a harsh landscape.

Without hesitation, the camera slid from my shoulder. I bent, twisted, crouched — engaging in all manner of bodily contortions to frame the right composition for my growing floral archive.

Was it cold? Yes.
Was it worth it? Absolutely.

And so begins part one of the story behind this painting — a moment of discovery, captured in frost-edged air, that would later bloom again on canvas.

Putting on my flamboyant artist’s hat, I stepped into the field of expression and allowed myself to explore impressionist renderings — music blaring, energy rising.

Working in multimedia on heavily gesso-primed cardboard is an ecstatic experience. With a cup of coffee close at hand and enthusiasm to burn, I launched into the vision. Household rollers, acrylic pours, ink splashes, and sweeping, broad-brushed strokes replaced the controlled precision I’m known for.

As someone who identifies as a “Hyper Photo Realist” — my own term for my preferred discipline — this freedom surprised me. I am accustomed to restraint, detail, and disciplined rendering. Yet in this moment, looseness became liberation.

From the layered textures and spontaneous gestures emerged a surprisingly delightful image — alive, atmospheric, and emotionally charged. The process reminded me that creativity expands when control softens.

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and know I will return to this expressive style in future works — not as a departure from realism, but as a complementary voice within it.
