THE STORY
Viewing a color photograph inspired me to draw this illustration. I don’t remember the image, but I do remember the source of the light, the contrast, and the magnificent capture of alertness in the bird which inspired me to find a story to tell. Kittiwake gull pencil illustration
The challenge to control the pencil leads to mid-tones with a feel for movement in-flight left the paper really overworked. Am I pleased with the final result? You can count on it.
All these studies of flight leave me pondering where these illustration studies will end up. I have a strong thought that the progression will lead to the surreal in painting and tell stories of the observations I discover in creation. What I saw in this wonderful creature was purpose and alertness to opportunities for food.
It reminds me of how many of us have a desire and alertness to find out where to find the food for life. You know, that passion that comes from fulfilling dreams and rising above the darkness in our souls. This may lead us to the grave with many unfulfilled dreams. But that’s if we don’t discover the bread we are looking for. Being alert, this one fed well.
A place of belonging
This pencil drawing and allegory could find its way to any city or country dweller’s wall in New York, Moscow, Wellsford, Donnybrook, Hewler, Bendigo, London, even a cave in Lebanon. Who knows but it will be a pleasure to meet the buyer.
A lot of you find it hard to believe in a personal God who made this wonderful world. God is approachable, genial, and interested in all we do. In my youth, I thought He was a figment of warped imagination and to be blamed for all our problems. I was wrong! … Ask me about how I discovered the difference and I am more than happy to tell you what happened.
The more I research and talk to my friend, the great architect, creative genius, King of Kings, the Great I AM, the more I marvel at creatures like these.
The lover of my soul created wildlife with a purpose in their being. We humans can be arrogant and self-righteous at times. The careless and foolish decisions we make, (from ignorance or arrogance), are vividly seen in the way we abuse each other and the world we have vastly mess up. Most of us know the ecological imbalance we are creating because we don’t fully understand the purpose of our being. I am as guilty as all of us so I don’t point the finger. I know our ignorance needs mercy and this creature needs our care as much as we do.
