PROVERB

Covert with lust
Forget your neighbor
There is no trust
Animal instinct

THE STORY

The seagull’s natural behavior and instinct (me first) inspired this illustration. I drew the image from a photograph taken on Takapuna beach near Rangitoto Island, Auckland, New Zealand.

I realized the same instinct is in us when we miss out on a coveted lust. Scrapping for something I greedily lusted over left me convicted of my self-centeredness. I noted I didn’t care about the other.

I guess that’s why we call it animal instinct and the seagulls act as a metaphor. Put into context, animal instinct is void of love.

There were times in our own family when pure selfishness ruled my wayward heart. Under conviction, I thought, “No wonder the world has problems, I am part of it”.

Realizing we all struggle with selfishness in varying degrees, (me first, animal instinct), I decided I had to make changes to my own behavior and my neighbor would not suffer the consequences of my self-centered eating frenzy. There truly is enough for everyone so I can be a problem solver rather than the problem.

My seagull heart had to die.

The process

This simple Chiaroscuro pencil illustration challenged me. To control the pencil leads to mid-tone perfection with sensitivity to the high contrast highlight and shadows in the feathers was a good exercise. This was a new territory using just the white paper. Adding the color cut-outs on the perspex was just a design element for modern decor presentation.

Maybe a successful ex-pat Kiwi in London or New York would buy this to remind themselves of the treasures of Takapuna beach on the North Shore of Auckland city.
