A LIZARD CALLED SKINK – Trusted company
PROVERB:

Trust
Something earned
Fearless
Virtue
A knowledgeable heart

THE STORY:

This Skink, a Lizard, earned my affection and hitched a ride in my camera bag. He traveled from the studio to trial my new bike loaded with camping and camera gear on a Mahurangi West walk/cycleway. I had placed my camera gear bag on some warm rocks near the studio and he took shelter in the warmth of the bag. When I moved the bag to place in my car he scurried for protection in one of the pockets.

Fast forward to Mahurangi West at Cudlip Point and Te Muri beach where I discovered him in the boot of my car. I didn’t have the heart to discard him in a foreign territory so I placed him carefully in a plastic container for the journey back to the studio. My response was because I knew he had family around my studio and I don’t know how the separation would have affected him. I am not all-knowing about creatures’ habits, but I care. I am not a greeny per se, but I care and because I care, I don’t like to see anything suffer unnecessarily.

Because God cares, I am learning to care with the same attention to detail. He made everything precious to Him unless it is full of evil and arrogantly proud.

A little cathartic experience.

Writing this story has brought back to my attention a childhood memory. Have you ever experienced being verbally abused? I am sure you have! I recall, as a 12-year-old, going to a movie about a little dog with friends and I crying because of one scene where the dog was harmed. Some of my friends mocked me for being, a sissy (embedded misogyny) and I didn’t understand why. Isn’t it natural (or should be), to empathize with something else that is in pain? I was shamed and that one small event screwed my sensitive nature for multiple years into adulthood where I was too ashamed to show deep affection out of fear of being mocked. Being a male this probably had more impact on my confused purposefulness in this life.

Back to the little Skink.

The skink reflects the glory of our manufacturer, the wonders of which I am now unashamed to honor in all of my artistic endeavors. My meet with him has left befriending and insightful respect for myself and Him in a more meaningful way. For too long the belittling shame of bullies has intimidated me, stopping me from being who I really am. Like this Skink, I want to protect myself from harm. I was given life gifts as an artist with passion and feeling. There is no shame in heaven because of who I am. That’s what Jesus wants on earth, now. So Skink and I say, “Wear your emotions on your sleeves for all to see and don’t let the bullies rule you with their fear, born out of ignorance”.

I am now unashamed to honor this Skinks maker in all my artistic endeavors.

Please tell this story in London or Paris and Beijing or Sydney. You can also tell Oprah, Barak Obama or Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump, Bashar Al-Assad, Kim Jong-un, Angela Merkel or The Pope. Maybe even your spiteful neighbor might enjoy its simple story because of no matter what political, religious or philosophical opinions in our cultures, we all get to play our songs on a planet under the watchful eye of our producer in heaven.

Don’t get so busy that you can’t stop to appreciate the simple things.

If we are too busy to enjoy these simple delights and share them even with our enemies, then we are too busy.  Maybe fear is stopping us to live heaven on earth.

Ask Jesus. He knows full well how fear drove us to kill him and then lie to cover our secrets fears. This little skink has no idea how twisted mankind’s thinking is. It runs for protection because it has an inner knowledge to protect itself. Without trust how can it enjoy the sunshine God gave us freedom to enjoy. We have to earn its trust in the way we live by exercising an attractive goodwill nature and mercy. Something God can give to anyone if you dare.
