THE STORY

The Nauru Consul General to New Zealand commissioned me to create this painting of a Nauru Long-billed White Eye nest. Nauru is a republic island nation in the heart of the Pacific Ocean.

My main challenge was creating a shallow depth of field while still maintaining the vibrancy of the tropical colours.

This painting was completed during the early stages of my journey into photorealistic painting with a brush. I worked as a graphic designer and editorial illustrator, developing pencil, water colour and airbrush techniques. As a result, the fine detail found in airbrush art and photography inspired me to explore how the same precision could be achieved in oil painting. Ultimately, those skills led to this commission.

Another interesting aspect of the work was capturing the Pacific blue sky reflection on the upper surfaces of the leaves.

Today, the paintings belong in the home of the former Consul General of Nauru to New Zealand, although some records have since been lost.
