Attract the good desire
The original painting I created in 1989. In 2014 I chose to rework it and added the story “Hunters and Collectors”. The painting is due for completion in January/February 2018. Note: This image is only an indicator of the final product. New elements have been added to make the story stronger. If you are interested in buying the original please email your inquiry. Almost finished, January 18th 2018.
The thoughts behind the “Hunter and Collector” paintings came while watching people walking the beach hunting and gathering bits and pieces. Further, into the journey from “Hunters and Collectors 1“ I discovered taking home dreams and visions as mementos and edibles were as valid as physical items. I noted all creation has the hunter collector motivation. From that thought, I took the sentiment along further by adding some of the passions known to man.
I then included the Australian magpie, American Sea Eagle, Silver/White Eye, Snapper fish and a Gecko Lizard. Adding a businessman, with a humorous twist seeking answers in the universe, star-gazing, the quest for technical information and communication (Steve Jobs) and native men fishing all added to the parable.
We all hunt to gather
If you think about it, we are all hunting to gather. Whether we seek information about our origins, information to create technologies, a companion to love, a worm for dinner, a divine to talk to we are on the hunt. The essence of living is a perpetual motion before the end of time … or our use by date.
What about the philosopher’s desire to seek the meaning of life, the religious persons desire to please their chosen Gods, the business mans desire to hunt and gather profits or the scientists desire to find answers in the universe? We all hunt. Then there is the lion’s desire to find an antelope to gather and feed its young, the young woman’s passion to bed a man for love or the alcoholics desire to be drunk so they can forget their pain for a season. We all, hunt to live out a desire whether for good or evil (evil, having a destructive power to it which harms the good). Some hunt to murder, some hunt to rob a bank, some hunt to rape, some hunt to pervert justice with perjury, these are evil desires.
Most hunt to have peace, security, love, and wisdom of purpose in building a nest in which to house our cultures and gathered collectibles.
All of us, being hunter-gathers, may ask this question from our free will. “What are the desires we hunt for and what is it we want to gather before our race is run”?
You’ve got it!!!! … “You hunter and collector”.
The Indigenous connection
I have further developed my research into indigenous art storytelling from the Australian Aboriginal, North American Indian and New Zealand Maori. I admire these people and see a lot of great wonder in how they show their culture in art and music. As my perceptions develop I include combinations of western fine art and Indigenous works.
Common to all people is the want for cultural identity. Worshiping something greater than ourselves and telling the story through culture is a common desire.
In the painting “Hunters and Collectors 2” I have introduced Chinese Mandarin (梦想) and Asian Indian Hindi (सपना) typography. These spell out the word “Dream” in what I call type hieroglyphics. We all dream which is part of the nature of God within. Our inner appearance, spirit, is made in the image and likeness of God and our outward appearance is part of the broken physical image. Generations of breakdown, systemic aberrations in physical appearance and the birth of cultural habits in isolation from one another have not changed the heart desire of humans. We all want peace and meaning to life. We all dream, hunt, and gather. Cultural, art, linguistics, and typography differ but our heart language is the same.
