In reality, the sacred kingfisher is one of the best-known birds in New Zealand due to the iconic photographs published over many years by Geoff Moon. His early images reveal in detail, foraging skills and the development of chicks in nests as fledglings. Equally recognizable are hunched silhouettes waiting patiently on powerlines or other high perches over estuaries or mudflats. The silhouette converts in a flash into a streak of green diving steeply to catch its prey. Kingfishers peace birds flight
I captured these 2 next to my studio gallery on the Mahurangi River, Warkworth, New Zealand. At last count, I numbered approx 15 birds on both sides of the town bridge and discovered their nesting/home address a few hundred meters up the river in the clay banks .
In 2018 one of the Kingfisher flew upstairs into my studio behind me and had an Oooppps!!! moment. It hit the glass trying to fly out and stunned, flopped under the drafting board. I chose to dialogue a narrative and suggested I would make him famous before I rescued him.
LSS I photographed him before release and now include him in the painting “Tiritiri Matangi Island”.
The Kingfishers story
Kingfishers dwell in New Zealand in a range of habitats. Key characteristics are, elevated observation posts to hunt from, banks or suitable standing trees to excavate nests and open or semi-open habitats which support a range of prey items.
Other names: New Zealand Kingfisher, kōtare, kotare, green kingfisher, tree kingfisher, wood kingfisher
Geographical variation: Eight subspecies in Australia, New Caledonia, the Loyalty, Lord Howe Norfolk, and the Kermadec Islands and New Zealand. The New Zealand subspecies is vagans.
The sacred kingfisher(Todiramphus sanctus) is a medium-sized woodland kingfisher that occurs in mangroves, woodlands, forests, and river valleys in Australia, New Zealand, and other parts of the western Pacific. In New Zealand, the species is also known by its Māoriname kōtare.
It is called “sacred” for it was said to be a holy bird for Polynesians, who believed it to have control over the waves. Likewise, the local subspecies of collared kingfisher and other kingfishers in the southwestern Pacific were ascribed venerable power over the ocean.
I see this story telling wonder in arts and crafts, hence the choice of a greenstone carving. This is my symbolic interpretation of a mystery in language.
Within the culture of these beautiful Kingfishers is a host of knowledge beyond comprehension. An inner world of science and engineering, an outer world of beauty and aerodynamics mixed with alert skills reflects the skills of an artisan carving greenstone.
My meditations on Kingfishers and their wonder draw many parallels around the beauty in mankind and the wonder God gave us to enjoy.
If you are curious, as I am, about why we mismanage our earth go directly to the manufacturer and He will gladly show the reasons and our caretaker solutions.
Multitudes have discovered His secret which is available for all who seek the mystery of life’s beginnings and the wonder of seasons and natural maintenance. The Kingfisher and our artisan skills are wonders to marvel at. Kingfishers peace birds flight
My use of the artisans’ greenstone
It’s hard to write in words of understanding. The gift of the creative spirit can manufacture a story from anything the eye sees and in this case, greenstone carvings herald the narrative.
Beyond culture, skin color, religion and politics into the heart of life where creative expression has pure motives you will discover the story as a metaphor language in the artisan’s greenstone.
This story captures peace meeting with wisdom and council around an artisans dexterity in created work. This is one of heavens gifts and revelations which add purpose and peace and rest in discovery.
Discovering the mystery brings with it the peace of God, beyond understanding, adding rest, answering mysteries of our existence and echoing contentment in man’s creative enterprise.
I choose the greenstone pendant to represent the story of eternal life around valuable wisdom in council from everlasting truths. The manufacturer’s presence and promised freedom are embedded in the greenstones story.
Discovering that jewel adds new living dimensions of wonder and glory.
The indigenous influence art disclaimer
My attempt to paint, study and replicate indigenous art is at its best, nieve. In the best way, I know there is no way I would knowingly *disrespect a people group who I dearly love and these are my best attempts to date.
I study, at my own pace and these studies unmask a deeper honor toward the Maori people. That sentiment is embedded in my borrowing of their creative intelligence to partner with my western cultured photorealism painting.
As an Australian/New Zealand citizen, I am honored indigenous peoples give me much pleasure in their interpretive storytelling and illustration and carving. Paralleled alongside the rhythmic sounds of their music, dance, and song makes this gifted people part of my inheritance. Understanding wider family (Whanau) bonds add to New Zealand’s and our worlds rich cultural inheritance. We are all indebted to God for this joy and prejudice should have no place in our heart against any people group.
I have a lot to discover as I embed what I learn crossing the bridge of understanding from my culture into indigenous cultures of our world.
My Godly inheritance
This is a part of my Godly inheritance inspiring me looking forward to experiencing their offerings in heaven where there is no fear, hatred, prejudice or offense to darken what God created to be good.
* Some have claimed I have no place using Aboriginal influences in my art because it is disrespectful to the sacredness of their culture and yet I consider my art just as sacred because I have as much freedom as my brothers and sisters, to explore all wonders in the world of art and freedom of expression. I choose to honor them incorporating their beautiful art disciplines with mine while giving glory to God for our diversity. It is my opinion we should be cellebrating one anothers story telling and diversity seeking truthfully to love one another, racial arrogance and one upmanship which helps no one.
