The inspiration for Rainbows End came from a friend’s photo. Oil Painting rainbow dolphins
I have painted this in the hope that the pleasures imaged in the dolphin’s play will bring continuous joy to the viewer.
The challenge was to use a gesso primed coarse canvas to see what effect I could make. Originally painted in 1989 it remained on my wall collecting dust, admiration, and traveled to many exhibitions.
In 2016 I decided to add some symbolic interest to the play of the dolphins. Ideas grew and took shape – I will leave the rest to your imagination. I trust the pleasure I get when I imagine the dolphins in the water will be the same for you.
The reason for adding the children in a Zorb Ball is to add childlike wonder in stress-free moments of play. To marvel at rainbows, ocean, mammals, sunlight and the freedom to play can become a forgotten dream in the stresses of modern adulthood.
Pleasure in the imagination, telling stories, and painting
In a child’s eyes, the pleasure of the fantasy associated with the end of the rainbow must match the pleasure of seeing a dolphin playing in the wild.
The untouchable, delight of a free imagination to touch the wonder of creation in all its glory is a gift. Humorless stress easily robs a healthy, playful imagination. The fear-driven mind finds it hard to see simple delights.
I have swum, played, windsurfed, and surfed with Dolphins and Orcas and it is a very special pleasure to which I owe a great hunk of gratitude to my maker for such experiences.
Remember, take time out, stop worrying, and learn to play again. It will be liberating for you.
