THE STORY

This is a story about an island becoming a sanctuary of recovery for birds species heading toward extinction. The painting is the first study for a larger work to be completed in late 2021-22. The treasures of Tiritiri Matangi Island inspired me to tell the story.

Nestled off the East coast of Auckland, New Zealand, Tiritiri Matangi Island is one of Auckland’s international treasures. Like-minded visionaries have worked on a recovery program to be proud of.

In times past, the forefathers, bound in the knowledge of their generation, did not foresee the damage they would create. On the whole, a different understanding of the environment supported their endeavors to create material welfare.

This ignorance, through lack of knowledge, was in an environment with abundant supplies and fewer demands with a smaller population. The modern generation is more informed. With the population increasing at a challenging rate the pressure motivated folk to stand up and find ways to recover what was heading toward extinction.

This costs time, and money, and needs enthusiasm, passion, and affection for creatures that dwell with us for their season. Tiritiri Island and its custodians echo that reality.

My reasons

All this inspired me to create a statement about what I see. This painting is the vision taking place.

Our earth offers us raw materials to capitalize on and managing wisely is a must. To do this with little respect for the balance of nature and managing our natural world is a challenge. We live in a financial world and like it or not money talks. Our responsibility to wisely manage what we have should be part of the price to recover what we nearly lost. Once recovered there is a cost to support it for generations to come and in my opinion that is being responsible.

The establishment of Tiritiri Matangi Island is a treasure in this generation for generations yet to be born.
