STORY

This Red Rose oil painting captured my imagination from a worm’s eye view looking towards the heavens. I wanted to capture the translucent sunlight in the petals. This worm’s eye view offered a different perspective and as an afterthought, then came the ladybird. It is a partial copy

It’s an extraordinary science to know what is happening in the leaves and stems from the action of photosynthesis. To create the wonder of sight and scent in the petals of the rose is a WOW to me. I for one am in awe of how God made this.

All I can do is recreate what I see on canvas within the confines of the artist’s imagination. Like the  paintings, I was challenged to see how true I could work the oils. I wanted the photo-realistic appeal to express the sentiment in the Rose story.

This Red Rose oil painting began with a worm’s-eye view, looking upward toward the heavens inspired from my of my original painting. I wanted to capture the translucent sunlight glowing through the petals, and only later added the ladybird to complete the scene. Even a glimpse into the science behind a rose—photosynthesis shaping colour, scent, and form—fills me with awe. God’s design is extraordinary, and this painting is my humble attempt to honour what He made.

All I can do is recreate what my eyes behold, using the imagination He placed within me. As with my Lily from the Valley 3 and Lily from the Valley 4, I challenged myself to work the oils as truthfully as possible. The goal was a photorealistic feel that carries the heart of the Rose story—a quiet expression of wonder, gratitude, and the beauty God invites us to see.

A parable of the rose

A rose has no nationality, pride, or political or religious divide. It simply exists in beauty, belonging to no one. Its universal appeal teaches us how to treat one another—with openness, kindness, and dignity. Through His creation, the Master Craftsman whispers His presence into our homes, reminding us to live without fear or prejudice and to let our lives blossom like the rose. Rose ladybird oil painting

The ladybird, protecting the rose from aphids, becomes a symbol of guardianship—making room for full growth and glory. In the same way, we must tend the garden of our hearts: till the soil, remove what steals life, water with kindness, heal with praise, prune what no longer serves, and surround ourselves with good companions. When we guard our inner life with God’s wisdom, we too will flourish in His beauty.

How should I paint the rose? Every style—cubism, impressionism, realism, modernism, expressionism—has its place, yet greater than any technique is the love of the Master who gave us the rose itself. This red rose painting can grace homes from Dubai to London, New York to Sydney, but its true purpose is deeper than decoration. Its meaning invites quiet reflection, reminding us to pause and admire the beauty God has placed before our eyes.

Don’t become so busy building your own empire that you forget to look up and marvel at His creation. I have learned certain skills with oil on canvas, enough to inspire others, but I know creativity is far bigger than me. This work is simply my offering—an expression of gratitude to the One who made the rose and teaches us to see with wonder.
