PROVERB
Before an egg, there is a sparrow
Before a sunflower, there is a seed
Before a city, there is a dream
Before a dream, there is a mind
Before a mind, there is a life
Where there is life, there is death
Before death, there is life
You must be born before you die
Metamorphosis
Something must die to be Born Again
THE STORY
I dreamed of painting a sunflower in oils, something truly beautiful to look at. The idea began in my friend Hugh’s garden, where one sunflower stood out in its magnificence. I wanted to capture it in a way that went beyond an ordinary art piece.
To start, I photographed it using a polarising filter, which made the sky clearer and the yellow petals shine brighter. The photo turned out so well that I knew right then—I had to paint it in oils. Sunflower Oil Painting Sparrows
This painting became a long-term project that I worked on in stages. Each time I came back to it, I found something new to add. During the process, I learned a technique called oil paint antiquing, which gave the background an aged look.
Painting the sunflower itself was a real challenge, and I pushed myself to tell a stronger story through this painting.
Additions
I added the sparrows, a transparent city and the tale of photosynthesis embedded as a metaphor. Sunflower Oil Painting Sparrows
This painting is inspired by the idea of Photosynthesis and Metabolism—the processes that keep plants alive. To me, they mirror the human desire to create.
When I look at the sunflower, I feel grateful for the beauty of nature, the sky, and the vast universe. I’m amazed by the flowers of creation, but even more by the Creator who made it all possible.
It makes me think about how God transforms us through the birth, love, and death of His Son. One life given so another can begin—that’s a beautiful mystery.
From the seed of an idea came a harvest, born through death, to feed many.
Metamorphosis
A seed must first be planted, die, and then rise again into new life.
Think about it: a sunflower grows from a seed, sparrows come from sparrow seeds, and even the seed of human imagination inspires the creation of cities—places where we live, dream, and play out the game of life. Without seed-thoughts, life itself would be impossible.
“Let us Create” reflects the nature of God, whose breath gave man the power to dream. These seed-ideas, carried in the hearts of our forefathers, live on in us. Through Christ’s death and resurrection, God is no longer separate from us. His return to life shows His magnificence, a true metamorphosis.
Even my own life began with a seed: the death of a single sperm brought about my birth. The purpose of existence continues in every offspring, carrying the DNA of the seed forward.
Plant it. Nurture it. Then watch in awe as it blossoms into the grandeur God intended.
The Science
• Photosynthesis – Plants create complex organic matter from water, carbon dioxide, and salt using sunlight as energy and chlorophyll as a catalyst.
• Synthesis – means combining materials or ideas to make a complex whole, such as building a compound by joining elements or simpler compounds. This process is used in chemistry.
• Metabolism – is the set of chemical reactions that take place within a living thing to sustain life. There are two types of metabolism: constructive metabolism, which involves creating proteins, carbohydrates, and fats that make up body tissue and store energy, and destructive metabolism, which breaks down complex substances to produce energy and waste.
• Metamorphosis – is the way that an animal’s body grows and changes after it is born or hatched. This involves a significant and sudden alteration in the animal’s physical structure through the growth and separation of cells.
• Germination – the sprouting of a seed, spore, or other reproductive body, usually after a period of dormancy. The absorption of water, the passage of time, chilling, warming, oxygen availability, and light exposure may all operate in initiating the process.
