Before an egg, there is a sparrow
Before a sunflower, there is a seed
Before a city, there is a dream
Before a dream, there is a mind

Before a mind, there is a life
Where there is life there is death
Before death, there is life

You must be born before you die

Something must die to be Born Again

I dreamed of painting a beautiful oil picture of a sunflower as a magnificent sight to behold. This started in my friend Hugh’s garden. It became clear to me that I wanted to capture the magnificence of this sunflower in a way that was more impactful than just taking a normal art piece. To photograph the initial image I knew that selecting a polarising filter would increase the clarity of the sky while making the yellow more vibrant.

The printed photograph was amazing and I decided right there and then that I had to paint an oil picture of it.

This artwork was a long-term project that I worked on intermittently. Every time I returned to my easel, I found something new to include. Along the way, I discovered a technique called oil paint antiquing, which gives the background an aged appearance.

Capturing the sunflower’s likeness was an artistic challenge. I pushed myself to tell a more compelling story through my painting.

I added the sparrows, followed by a transparent city and the tale of photosynthesis.

The painting connects to the narrative that I envision in Photosynthesis or Metabolism, which refers to the scientific, chemical, and biological processes involved in plant function, running in parallel with the human desire to create.

I am amazed when I gaze beyond the sunflower’s petals and into the vast expanse of the sky and universe. I am in awe of the flowers of creation, but even more in awe of the divinity that created all possibilities.

A transformation can be observed in the mystery of God, through the birth, love, and death of His Son, where one’s death leads to another’s birth.

From the seed-planted idea came a harvest from death to feed a multitude.

You must plant a seed in the soil, for it to die naturally, and then resurrect into a new life.

For example, a sunflower grows from sunflower seed, male seeds become sparrows, and the seed of man’s dreams inspires city creativity. We desire dominion over creation to build cities where we can dream and play the game of life.

Without seed thoughts, life is impossible. “Let us Create” reflects the likeness of God’s nature. The wishes came from our forefathers’ hearts. He ceased being separate from us due to his passing. His return to life and fellowship with humans display his magnificence.

The offspring created from man and grown in a woman’s womb gave birth to me after its end, to produce this representation. Hence, the purpose of existence resides within the offspring.

Bury it, care for it, and witness its grandeur blossoming before your sight, as God intended.

The Science

Photosynthesis – Plants create complex organic matter from water, carbon dioxide, and salt using sunlight as energy and chlorophyll as a catalyst.

Synthesis – means combining materials or ideas to make a complex whole, such as building a compound by joining elements or simpler compounds. This is a process used in chemistry.

Metabolism – is the set of chemical reactions that take place within a living thing to sustain life. There are two types of metabolism – constructive metabolism, which involves creating proteins, carbohydrates, and fats that make up body tissue and store energy, and destructive metabolism, which breaks down complex substances to produce energy and waste.

Metamorphosis – is the way that an animal’s body grows and changes after it is born or hatched. This involves a significant and sudden alteration in the animal’s physical structure through the growth and separation of cells.
