THE STORY

This painting was inspired by my business mentor Matt Tommee’s suggestions during our Covid-19 lockdown.

The challenge was, “Do something you have not done before and use materials you would normally throw away. Don’t waste anything”!

My challenge was found in dirty wasted art paper covered with multiple colored acrylic splashes.

I added leftover, water and turps thinned paint from other projects. Mixed Media painting Bumblebee

The technique became a happening event during other projects where I splashed the waste, without coercion, and then placed it on the “Who knows how this will end up”? for another day’s pile of unfinished works.

A few months later while doing a studio tidy-up the unfinished art refreshed my memory of the challenge. I grabbed an old wedding photograph frame to fit, ripped the paper edges, and thought, “What next”?

The mix of background colors seemed to suit something floral and yellow.

This time I squeezed acrylic tubes of yellow and red treating the work with an expressionist impasto vibrance. I splashed more dribbles added an interpretation of sunflower seeds and finished it off with a flurry of led pencil strokes.

It was a pleasurable experience … but … something was missing!

After another hiatus, this thought occurred “Why not a watercolor pencil, photorealist bird in flight”? Realizing it looked like an expressionist garden scene the AHA moment arrived that a bee would better suit the flower.

Of course, it had to be a Bumblebee.

Why the Bumblebee

If you think about it, the Bumblebee is a Big Wonder on this planet plus its size and shape would fill the picture nicely.

I googled bumblebee and discovered a lot of information, elevating my wonder at the design and its place in the ecology chain.

Rather than writing the story, I attach these links to what I learned.  Deep Look, David AttenboroughScience Mag, Wikipedia.

The philosopher’s thoughts

The philosopher’s desire to seek the meaning of life is open to all mankind.

To seek and find is the desire of a seeking person stirring deep passion. Genuine truth seekers will find the key to unlocking the knowledge they seek Many doors open to genuine seekers..

As the New Zealand Maori say, “What is in the Kete (Basket) of knowledge you look for when you seek a lifestyle to enjoy”?

In the context of spirituality, truth gives new life and meaning to our whole being, body soul, and spirit.

Dwelling in the physical world of our universe then becomes a fascination, at times beyond comprehension study of all that is available to learn.

Science, education, entertainment, philosophy, religion, and even government all take on a different meaning when the light shines and the fact that a (not supposed to fly) bumblebee can fly becomes a no-brainer.

The bumblebee should fly because the way it is engineered means it is meant to fly. And fly it will as it fulfills its purpose in ecologies welfare.

I hope you enjoy the story.
