THE JOYS OF MATAKANA COAST AND COUNTRY 1
Treasure your environment now
Earn the favour of your children’s children
And you will eat the good fruit of heavens reflection
This unique panorama book was inspired after a rejected contract by a client in London. I had produced the work and at the last-minute, they pulled the plug leaving me dealing with some frustrated emotions. Plagued with “Duped again” and feeling hard done by a thought occurred to me, “Why not use the art and produce a coffee table book”. I became thankful for the rejection. I must admit it was a prayerful consideration in how to deal with what I thought “Being used again”. This is a regular occupational hazard for creatives that ungrateful speculators use.
Having taken many glorious photos of our district over the years, I went into my archives. It was there that I resurrected what I could use and so ventured out into the wilderness looking for more. As good fortune would have it, many people I spoke with gave me lots of vistas to discover. They also offered opinions to build on and lots of encouragement to finish the dream.
A Dream Grows:
To be honest, the more I created the concept the more I became enthused and as the project developed I thought, “How do you create a static presentation to capture the pleasurable feelings of what we so much love about where we live”? The scenery, the sounds the Flora and Fauna, the emotions, all tugged on my creative juices. I prayerfully asked the question when an idea came from heaven. Create something outside the normal books with luxury in it, layout differences and juxtaposition squares of the life that I see, hear and play within the vistas. Done!
After hours of work on the presentation, I also noted an ecology theme starting to take place because I had time to see. To look at the past and see into the future of how we were treating this amazing environment.
Not being a pessimist, I could see a great deal of hope embedded in those who care enough to be responsible for their own decisions. They care for our environment as we build our little kingdoms (what we personally rule over for ourselves) on earth. Of course, I also see that the prophetic scriptures (Gods revelation to mankind) show that the future is not all doom and gloom as some would allude to. They show a wonderful restoration time ahead for all the damage we have done and are doing. There is evidence of that everywhere if our eyes are open to see the other side of darkness.
A Range of Gifts:
So now I had the vision for creating a whole gift range around the book developed so I could place in the hands of all, something, a tool that we can use to boast about our privileges and our wonderful environment to give as gifts to friends and family alike. This beautiful book will sell the “The Matakana Coast and Country” all over the world, from London to New York, Paris to Sydney, Moscow to Beijing and it will grace any coffee table in any style of interior decoration known.
As an artist, photographer and designer there is no end to the vision. Now slowly a team of gifted people are coming on board to flesh the dream out. I am now able to plan better and get some more sleep. Book 2 of Matakana Coast and Country is taking shape plus book 3 of a different district and book 4 of the fantastic story of restoration and recovery on “Tiritiri Matangi Island” in the Hauraki Gulf, Auckland, New Zealand. All are on the planning board for late 2017 between a couple of paintings. I’m a happy man.
There’s lots of early morning and evening travel, patience to capture the wildlife the way I visioned, in the making of this. Even returning for a second or third time to improve on my initial capture. The stories were typed on an iPhone 5s, photographed with a Canon 5D Mark 1 and 7D and edited on a 27″ iMac in Photoshop CC.
The photo collages of all panoramas are based on a technique I have with the intent for multiple reproduction techniques, including 2m canvases down to playing cards, jigsaw puzzles, and dinner sets.
