Action a vision
In the making
From the same image as “Tuscany 2″, this sight greeted me driving to Omaha beach for an early morning SUP (Stand Up and Paddleboard) with a friend. They had been running late which afforded me some time to cruise. Driving along Sharps Road, Matakana this scene popped over the hill and this photographer/artist could not let this go by. I had to stop and capture. I remembered the Tuscany I have seen in other images and heard about from friends. WOW, Tuscany is in New Zealand as well.
With the image of Tuscany running through my mind, I decided to research its history in central Italy.
The Renaissance (Rinascimento in Italian means “rebirth”, dating back to the 14th century. My envision is a similar development happening in this North Auckland District in New Zealand. Although Warkworth/Matakana is smaller, I watch the development of men’s dreams shaping to create a unique town and district. All be it without the wars and prehistory the Tuscans had endured.
The region has a relief dominated by hill country. Comfortably embedded with beautiful ocean bays, islands to the East, the fortress ranges of Tamahunga to the North, fertile plains, rivers, and streams, Matakana Sandspit is a jewel in the making.
The first settlers in this district came to log native timbers, the next generation established farms, market gardens, and service industries fuelled the growth of communities around the churches, sports clubs, and pubs. Most of the labor today is farming with a changing emphasis on vineyards, olive groves, lifestyle blocks, tourism, and the arts. With its summer harvesting, olive groves, wineries, art galleries, restaurants, walkways, and cafes spread throughout the district Matakana is the New Zealand Tuscany.
Tuscany 1 colors are saturated to portray vibrant scenery. These colors are fashionable in Australian and New Zealand scenic photography.
Could Warkworth, could Matakana and the embedded towns become to New Zealand what Tuscany has to Italy? Let our children tell the story in 100 years’ time.
