THE STORY
This work was framed using reclaimed wedding photo frames, whitewashed to create a soft, contemporary mount. The oval format allowed space for the Tui illustration alongside a handwritten proverb, resulting in a balanced and intimate presentation.
The original Tui photograph has received awards in New Zealand and the United States. This drawing now forms part of my garden art series, alongside limited-edition, acrylic-enhanced photo art works.
Rendered as a chiaroscuro pencil illustration on archival, acid-free fine art paper, the piece uses strong contrasts of light and dark to bring depth, form, and quiet drama to the Tui and flax flower. Tui flax flower pencil illustration
Why do I like Tui?
The Tui captivates me with its intelligence, agility, and unmistakable character. When the light catches its feathers, colour and movement come alive.
I’ve often imagined training one — perhaps possible as a hatchling, but unlikely as an adult. Its fierce independence would outlast any patience.
I see deep allegory in the Tui’s nature, and I sense it will continue to appear in my work as a symbol of freedom, presence, and quiet wisdom.
