THE UNWILLING MARTYRS – Something has to die for another to live.
Modern Art illustration pelican fish martyr
In 1990 this started out as some fun with different mediums in black, silver and white on the hardwood. As I played around with design and technique a story began emerging. I wanted a strong color to add interest. Bingo … red … and as I did blood rushed into my head and a thought occurred to me when a martyr is passionate about a cause their thinking process can lead to the extreme conviction of a willingness to die in the pursuit of fulfilling what they are passionate about.
A name came to mind. “Blood of the Martyrs”. The goal of a martyr is visioned in rewards promised after the conquest. When considering rewards, purpose, and fulfillment is envisioned which in turn stirs action. You see this in all aspects of life, whether a religious conviction, political conviction, personal conviction, even in the animal kingdom this is the DNA of life. With every goal dreamed and activated, something else must die whether time, other ideas, a life or a stream of thought. They dreamed for the reward that promises a comfort, and a place of rest to the victor. That is the martyr’s dream. I’m not sure the fish would agree but the pelican has a satisfied rest in mind but a watchful eye perhaps reveals the dream time of the next conquest and the fish are unwilling martyrs in the conflicts of living.
In 2016 I added the pelican and fish kingdom to the original painting and took out the red symbol of blood in the stream. This was replaced with the precious metal silver, In some circles, silver is symbolic of rich living. The train of thought was further developed on the theme of a martyr nature, using my pencil skills to depict the fish or school of fish as unwilling partakers in the school of death.
The 1990 original painting was completed after reworking in June 2016.
