YOU WILL BE THIRSTY AGAIN – I was Thirsty Tui flight birdbath feeding
THE PROVERB
Thirst and character
I was thirsty
And you gave me a drink
THE STORY
What a delight to capture these images. As with “I was Thirsty” we set up a bowl of sugared water on my friend Barrie’s back verandah in the flight path of the Tui. I set the camera with a 200mm lens and a 1.4 converter—so many photos to choose from. The intelligence and communication of these birds, and discovering the delicacy inspired me to consider the proverb about bleeding others to food. It is based on knowing when you’re thirsty and hungry you want to find food to satisfy your needs. Your hunger drives you to search and satisfy a desire.
Smart, swift, and alert, the Tui is primed for action. There was a magic moment as we eyed each other. They, like me, were probably wondering “What will the next move be?”
Within the knowledge of feeding and drinking, we need the wisdom to know what choice is right. We don’t want poison, hence intelligence. Tui does not know how to mix the delicacy as we do. I knew what to offer and their pleasure was free. They had to discover it. One of the family tasted the pleasure and led the rest to the feast.
Being winter, with a shortage of nectar, only intensified their hunger for a new energy source. Tui flight birdbath feeding
Wisdom, the application of knowledge, leads you to discover your source
The inspiration for “You Will Be Thirsty Again” is based on knowing when you are thirsty or hungry. It would help if you had instructions to find food to satisfy your needs. That is discovered when you know where food and drink come from. Within the knowledge of feeding and drinking, you need the wisdom to choose right. Right knowledge protects you from touching poison, hence intelligence.
The Tui don’t know how to mix sugared water. I applied learned knowledge to offer for the Tui’s enjoyment. The Tui’s pleasure was free. They had to discover where it was. One of their member’s curiosity led the rest to the pleasure.
An allegory built into the art
These thoughts came from many readings in “The Constitution from Heaven” (The Bible) that talk about being diligent in persistence, the glory of being, food for the stomach, and food for the spirit.
Watching this family of Tui (New Zealand native bird) I was impressed with their energy, purposefulness, and knowledge of where good food is served. What’s more, it was free. The only work they had to do was listen to the call and fly to the offering. They drank freely.
God is like that. To receive from Him, knowingly, you have to discover where the offering is, listen, believe it’s free to partake, and let your thirst take you to the bowl of living water on offer.
This principle is found in all the creation, be it feeding on the good which gives life or evil which brings death. When an enthusiast discovers something they enjoy, they will lead willing partakers to indulge. Note: Not all leaders lead to life!
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,” Matthew 25:35 (NIV)
