YOU TAUGHT ME TO FISH FOR TEA – And now I know you’re proud of me.
Waitemata Harbour oil painting Auckland
I photographed my friend Graham Braddock’s daughter Geraldine in a willow tree while she was fishing on their small pond in Dairy Flat. After looking at the images an idea formed to use it in a setting among Pohutukawa trees (New Zealand Christmas trees) from the Freeman’s Bay on-ramp to harbor bridge on Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour. In the last stages of completion, using the story of teaching a child to fish, I pictured the yachts, years later in a grown-up child’s life, as a symbol of success. An acquisition of the grown-up child who had appreciated dads willingness and attention to detail in educating the child with practical knowledge to catch their own fish.
On reflection, this is a journey worth the initial patience and sacrifice of any father to help their child understand the techniques necessary for catching food for the table. I assume you have heard of the Chinese Proverbs “Give me a fish and I eat for a day. Teach me to fish and I eat for a lifetime”. This painting embodies the sentiment of the child being taught simple disciplines. Later in life, these disciplines have a conversion into life successes that they are to be thankful for.
The painting’s production in 1987, has been in the collection of the artist since then. In 2016, the framing had a fresh look with the addition of the text and the Snapper fish.
The allegory and scenery in this painting could be seen as an inspiration in interior decoration. It suits homes or business walls in London, Auckland, Paris or New York. Its appeal bridges international boundaries into the heart of the viewer who will own this story.
